OPM3 maturity assessment and evolution across 8 business units of a mining corporation

A large mining corporation with 8 operating business units across different geographies needed to understand its organizational project management maturity under PMI's OPM3 model, and to have a roadmap to close gaps against a 67% international benchmarking standard.

A baseline diagnostic was carried out across five domains, followed years later by a comparative measurement. The analysis, updated in 2026, identified differentiated progress patterns across business units and defined a gap-closing plan organized into short-term quick wins, medium-term initiatives, and long-term institutionalization, coordinated by a corporate project management office (PMO/EPMO).

OPM strategy for a critical sanitation infrastructure company serving the mining sector

A sanitation services company responsible for critical industrial water and desalination infrastructure for a large mining corporation managed a project portfolio exceeding USD 46 million, at OPM3 Level 2 (Repeatable) maturity.

The diagnostic identified key gaps: technical ambiguity in tender documents, absence of a formal front-end loading (FEL) methodology, and governance gray areas. Eight organizational standards, a three-tier governance model, a full-lifecycle RACI matrix, and five immediate quick wins were designed. The first-phase roadmap projects an evolution from Level 2 to Level 4 (Managed) within 18–24 months.

About

30 years transforming project management in mining and energy

Civil Engineer from the University of Chile, with more than 30 years of experience transforming project management in high-complexity industries such as mining and energy. I have been a mining consultant since 2004, and spent 25 years at Codelco's Chuquicamata Division leading strategic investment and transformation initiatives.

I combine hands-on practice with an academic and international-standards foundation (Stanford, PMI, ISO), which allows me to assess organizational maturity, design high-impact PMOs, and elevate teams through postgraduate teaching at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the University of Chile, and the Catholic University of the North, among others.

I am the author of nine technical books on project management, mining, construction, contracts, risk, Primavera P6, Daily Work Plans, and Power BI, and founder of simulatorconstruction.com, a realistic simulation platform for contract, control, and risk management training and certification.
